Scratches on Hardwood Floors
If you have hardwood floors in your home, scratches are inevitable, even if you are careful.Scratches are damage to the surface layer of the floor only.
Here are some tips on how to fix scratches on hardwood floors.
Clean the scratched area using warm water or a rag dampened with mineral spirits. Allow the area to dry fully before trying to fix the scratch.
Purchase a stain marker, in a stain that is close to your floor color, and apply it to the scratch using the manufacturer’s instructions.
Dip a cotton swab into a small amount of the stain that you originally used when finishing the floor. Dab the stain on the scratch carefully.
Rub the area with a clean, dry cloth in a circular motion, to blend the marker or stain into the floor.
Rinse with another cloth moistened with clean water.
Allow the area to dry completely.
Once the area is clean and dry, apply a new layer of the protective coating. This can be a shellac, sealant or other finish.
Allow the surface to dry overnight.
